SAFER SPACE POLICY
WHAT IS A SAFER SPACE?
A safer space is a supportive, non-threatening environment where all participants can feel comfortable to express themselves and share experiences without fear of discrimination or reprisal. We use the word “safer” to acknowledge that safety is relative: not everyone feels safe under the same conditions. By acknowledging the unique experiences of each individual, we hope to create as safe an environment as possible.
OUR SAFER SPACE POLICY
In light of the continued need for safe and inclusive spaces for LGBT2SQ+ individuals, Out There Winnipeg (OTW) recognizes the imperative of establishing a policy aimed at fostering such environments during OTW activities.
Despite strides towards equality, the reality remains that few spaces exist where 2SLGBTQ+ members can authentically express themselves without fear of discrimination or discomfort. While allies are crucial to fostering inclusivity, the presence of non-2SLGBTQ+ individuals, even with the best intentions, can inadvertently create barriers to full participation and expression for 2SLGBTQ+ members.
The purpose of this policy is to affirm OTW's commitment to providing a healthy, inclusive, accessible, and safe environment where members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community can meet, socialize, engage in activities, and have fun without fear of prejudice or exclusion, as well as to provide guidance to coordinators in the conduct of their activities.
OTW commits to the following principles and guidelines:
1. Respect and sensitivity: OTW expects all participants to treat one another with respect, dignity, and sensitivity. Discriminatory language or behaviour, including but not limited to homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, and sexism, will not be tolerated.
2. Safer spaces: OTW is committed to creating and maintaining safer spaces where individuals feel comfortable expressing their authentic selves without fear of judgment, harassment, or violence. Participants are encouraged to communicate any concerns or discomfort they may experience to OTW organizers, who will take appropriate action to address the issue.
3. Visibility and representation: OTW will strive to ensure that 2SLGBTQ+ voices are heard and represented in decision-making processes and leadership positions within the organization. This includes actively seeking out and amplifying the perspectives of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in all aspects of OTW's activities and initiatives.
4. Feedback and accountability: OTW welcomes feedback from its members regarding the implementation of this policy and its effectiveness in fostering safe and inclusive spaces. OTW will regularly review and evaluate its policies and practices to ensure alignment with its values and objectives.
By adhering to these principles and guidelines, OTW reaffirms its commitment to fostering safe, inclusive, and supportive spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and allies to come together, socialize, and participate in activities that promote health, well-being, and community connection.
